Students: Insert Media and Code

1. Add: A File

While creating a thread or responding to somebody else's thread attach a file to your post.

Files can be most file types, documents, images etc.

  1. Start a thread or reply to a thread.
  2. After entering the subject and the text of the reply, click on the Add Attachments link.Image of post or reply to discussion with Add attachment link circled

     

  3. Click on the Upload and locate the file on your computer.Add attchment section of discussion post with Upload button circled

     

  4. Click on the file and then click Open.
  5. Alternatively, drag and drop a file into the drag area.
  6. Click the Post button.

The file is attached to the post and can be downloaded by others in the course by clicking a link.

2. Add: An Image

Add an image "inline" with your post.  This image is viewed as part of the post, not an attachment to be downloaded.

  1. Start a thread or reply to a thread.
  2. Click on the Insert Image icon in the button bar in the html editor (image of a camera).Image of html editor wiht the insert image icon circled

  4. Click the Upload button and locate the file on your computer.Add a file screen with the Upload button circled

     

  5. Click on the file and then click Open.
  6. Alternatively, drag and drop a file into the drop area.
  7. Click the Add button.
  8. Add Alternative text so that people who use screen readers know what the image is of.Alternative Text box with the alternative text field circled

     

  9. Click the Okay button.
  10. Finish the rest of your post, if necessary.
  11. Click Post.

3. Embed: Online Media

Embed a video from youtube, vimeo, etc., into your discussion post.

  1. Start a thread or reply to a thread.
  2. Click the Insert Stuff icon in the button bar in the html editor.image of html editor with the insert stuff button circled

     

  3. Scroll down the list of options and select Enter Embed Code.image of the liost olf available options in Insert Stuff with the Enter Embed code circled
  4. Paste the embed code for the video you wish to embed (these codes can be copied from the third party site that hosts the video and pasted into other sites).image of embed code window with code pasted in and the next button circled

     

  5. Click Next.
  6. Click Insert.
  7. Click Post.

Note: Most embed codes are not "responsive" meaning when viewed on a small screen such as a phone the video does not resize.  If you want your video to work on all devices locate the link to the video, go to https://iframely.com/embed and paste the link into the box, click the Embed Now button, then copy and paste the resulting code into your post using the above steps.

4. Record: Audio

Include audio in your post.

  1. Start a thread or reply to a thread.
  2. After entering the subject and the text of the reply, click the Insert Stuff icon.insert stuff button in toolbar

  5. Click on the New Recording button to start recording.  If you don't see the New Recording button, it is because the window is too small.  Enlarge the window by dragging the lower right corner down and to the right.image of video note window with new recording

     

    Note: On a mobile device, click on the Choose File option and then select take Take Video.

  6. Record your Video Note (maximum 30 minutes).  Click Stop Recording when you are finished.image of videonote recording window with the stop recording button circled 
    • You can preview the audio by clicking Play. Re-record by clicking the New Recording button again.
  7. When you are satisfied with the audio, click Next.

  8. Enter a title and description of your video. Title and Description Fields

    Note: A screen reader will read the title and description of the video note. 

  9. Change the Audio Language to the language you spoke when you recorded your Video Note.Audio Language menu

     

  10. Select Automatically generate captions from audio.check box

  12. You may see a message that the file is processing; it is not necessary to wait for the audio to render. You can finish by clicking Insert.image ofcircled  insert button at the bottom of the video render screen

     

  13. Click Post.

5. Record: Video Note

Include a Video Note in your post.

  1. Start a thread or reply to a thread.
  2. After entering the subject and the text of the reply, click the Insert Stuff icon.insert stuff button in toolbar

  12. You may see a message that the media file is currently being transformed, it is not necessary to wait for the video to render. You can click the Refresh Preview button, or you can insert the file to view it later and finish by clicking Insert.image ofcircled  insert button at the bottom of the video render screen

     

  13. Click Post.

Note: If you receive a message to check back later while Voice Note loads the video, click Post, then your thread will be posted and the video will appear later. Do not refresh your browser nor close it before clicking Post or your video could be lost.

6. Add: Code Snippets

You can add snippets of code to your discussion posts.

  1. Click the Insert Other Options icon (looks like a plus sign).insert other options icon
  2. Select Insert Code.insert code option in menu
  3. Select your coding language.source code editor

     

  4. Enter the snippet of codesource code editor
  5. Click the checkmark to save.checkmark
