To copy from a course site, you must be on or added to its Classlist with the role of Instructor or Instructor Read Copy.
Note: In most cases, when materials are copied twice, D2L duplicates the preexisting contents. Two exceptions are course files and templates. See table, below.

1. Copy: All course components from one course to another
Copy an old course site into a new course site.
- Go to the D2L course site you want to copy materials TO and select Course Admin.
- Select Import/Export/Copy Components.
- Select Search for offering.
- Select the magnifying glass icon to perform a search. It is not necessary to enter course name, number, and term, but doing so may narrow your results.
- Choose the course you want to copy (radio button, left) and select Add Selected.
- Choose Copy All Components.
2. Copy: Specific components from one course to another
Copy parts of an old course site into a new course site, e.g., just the Gradebook.
- Go to the D2L course site you want to copy materials TO and click Course Admin.
- Select Import/Export/Copy Components.
- Click Search for offering.
- Select the magnifying glass icon to perform a search. It is not necessary to enter course name, number, and term, but doing so may narrow your results.
- Choose the course you want to copy (radio button, left) and select Add Selected.
- Choose Select Components.
- Select the course materials you would like to copy:All items in a category can be copied (Copy all items) or you can copy individual items by choosing the Select individual items to copy option.
- Select Continue.
- If you did not choose the Select individual items to copy option, select Finish*.
a. *If you chose the Select individual items to copy option, select the items you wish to copy using the checkboxes (left).
b. Choose Continue.
c. Select Finish.
3. Import: Import a course from another Learning Management System
Import a course into D2L that has been exported from another Learning Management System.
Course packages from other Learning Management Systems can be imported into D2L. The Learning Management System from which the package comes must produce an IMS CP or QTI (if importing quizzes) compliant course package. This will be a zipped file folder.
Note: Course packages from the following platforms can be imported: Blackboard 6/7/8/9, Moodle v. 1.9/2/3, Pearson eCollege and UCompass.
- Go to the D2L course site you want to import materials TO and select Course Admin.
- Select Import/Export/Copy Components.
- Select Import Components.
- Verify that from a course package is selected.
- Select Start.
- Drag and drop the package file (exported from the prior LMS) or select Upload and locate the file on your computer. Depending on the size of the package, it could take some time for the file to upload.
- Select Import All Components.
4. Export: Export course as Brightspace Package
Instructors can export a course that can be imported into other D2L Brightspace environments.
For example, you can export a course and import it into D2L Community. Not all course components will export.
- Go to the D2L course site you want to export materials FROM and select Course Admin.
- Select Import/Export/Copy Components.
- Select Export as Brightspace Package.
- Select Start.
- Select the checkbox next to Select All Components to export the entire course, or select the individual components you wish to include.
- Choose Continue.
- Scroll down to the bottom and make sure you checkmark Include course files in the export package.
- Verify your selections and choose Export.
- Select Done and wait for a notification in the Update Alerts (bell icon).
- Select the Export finished notification from Update Alerts.
- Select Click here to download the export Zip package to download.
- Save the file on your computer.
- Choose Done.
5. Export: Export course as Common Cartridge
Instructors can export a course into a file that can be imported into another LMS.
Not all course components will export.
- Go to the D2L course site you want to export materials FROM and select Course Admin.
- Select Import/Export/Copy Components.
- Choose Export as Common Cartridge.
- Select Start.
- Select the checkbox next to Select All Components to export the entire course, or select individual components you wish to include.
- Select Continue.
- Verify your selections on the next page and select Export.
- Select Done and wait for a notification in the Update Alerts (bell icon).
- Select the Export finished notification from Update Alerts.
- Select Click here to download the export Zip package to download.
- Save the file on your computer.
- Select Done.
6. Export: Export course as Thin Common Cartridge
Instructors can export external learning tools into a file that can be imported into another LMS.
Not all course components will export.
- Go to the D2L course site you want to export materials FROM and select Course Admin.
- Select Import/Export/Copy Components.
- Choose Export as Thin Common Cartridge.
- Select Start.
- Select the checkbox next to Select All Components to export the entire course, or select individual components you wish to include.
- Select Continue.
- Verify your selections on the next page and choose Export.
- Select Done and wait for a notification in the Update Alerts (bell icon).
- Select the Export finished notification from Update Alerts.
- Select Click here to download the export Zip package to download.
- Save the file on your computer.
- Select Done.
