Instructor: Assess Discussions with Rubrics

To use a Rubric  to assess Discussion Topics  you must first create the Rubric in D2L.  See the Rubrics Help Pages for detailed instructions.

Note: If you want to use a Rubric to score a Discussion Topic that is connected to a Grade Item in the grade book, you must attach the Rubric to the Discussion Topic, not the Grade Item.

1. Attach: Rubric to Discussion Topic

Attach a Rubric previously created in D2L to a Discussion Topic.

On the Discussions List page, click on the down-arrow to the right of the Discussion Topic where you want to attach a Rubric and select Edit Topic.

  1. Select the Assessment tab near the top of the page.
  2. Click the Add Rubric button.Add Rubric Button

     

  3. A pop-up window that lists your available Rubrics will appear.  Check the box to the left of the Rubric you want to attach and click the Add Selected button.Rubric pop-up window with selection options

     

  4. You will return to the Edit Topic page where you will see the name of the selected Rubric under the Add Rubric button.  If you want to remove the Rubric, click on the X to the right of the Rubric name.
  5. Remember to Save at the bottom of the page.Rubric added to Discussion assessment page

2. Assess: Topic with Rubric

  Assess a Discussion Topic by evaluating posts with a Rubric created in D2L.

On the Discussions List page, click the down arrow to the right to the title of the Discussion Topic you want to assess and select Assess Topic.

  1. Click on the Topic Score link under the name of the student you want to evaluate.
  2. A pop-up window appears with the Rubric at the top of the window. Scroll down to see the student's posts at the bottom of that window.  After reading the posts, scroll back to the top of the window and click the check box for Publish score on save if you want to save the score to Grades as soon as you save the assessment. 
  3. Click in the Rubric box to select the appropriate levels for each criteria.
  4. Click the +Feedback link if you wish to write comments for that specific criterion.
  5. Add any general comments in the General Feedback box directly below the Rubric.
  6. Remember to Save and Close at the bottom of the page.animated image showing how to assess discussion using rubric
